EU sanctions on Azhar soon

The European Union is expected to blacklist Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Masood Azhar, responsible for the ghastly Pulwama terror attack, soon.

After China blocked India’s bid to block Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Masood Azhar, the European Union is expected to blacklist him soon. The proposal to get Azhar listed was moved by France and received support from the US and UK. China had previously prevented the sanctions committee from sanctioning Azhar in 2016 and 2017.

Meanwhile, India said it was disappointed at China for blocking the bid and added that it will keep pushing to get the JeM terrorist listed as a global terrorist. A statement released by the MEA read: “We are disappointed by this outcome. This has prevented action by the international community to designate the leader of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), a proscribed and active terrorist organization which has claimed responsibility for the terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir on February 14.”

The Feb. 14 attack that killed at least 40 paramilitary police was the deadliest in Kashmir's 30-year-long insurgency, escalating tension between the nuclear-armed neighbours, which said they shot down each other's fighter jets late last month, Reuters reported.

Meanwhile, UNSC members have warned that after China’s outrageous bid to save Masood Azhar the member countries “might be forced to pursue other actions” at the Security Council.

This is the fourth time that China has blocked the bid to list Azhar.

A diplomat from one of the member countries told PTI that China's move to block the listing is inconsistent with its own stated goals of combatting terrorism and furthering regional stability in South Asia. Another Security Council diplomat also blasted Pakistan for being dependent on China to protect terrorist groups and leaders that operate from its soil.
